Ashland Kentucky Pride Meeting Minutes

Sunday, September 1, 2024

Attending: Holly (she/her), Jenee (she/her), Sean (he/him), Elliot (he/they)

Absent:     Lu (she/her),  Sophie (they/them, she/her), Desire’ (she/her), Kasheena (she/her), Heather (she/her)

The meeting was called to order by Holly (President) at 1:51 pm.

Holly made a motion to accept the meeting minutes for the month of August. Jenee seconded the motion. Motion approved.

Holly made a motion to receive the treasurer’s report for the month of August. Jenee seconded. Motion approved.

Treasurer's report: Paypal: $1.999.86 • People’s: $2,770.53  (+349.58 in old account)   

• Voting for the open board position will be held at the October meeting

  • The board needs to establish job descriptions in the bylaws 

Old Business:

• Open board position

  • We need to start advertising on social media

• Fundraising/Sponsorship requests

  • Need to brainstorm on fundraising 

  • Look for grant opportunities 

• Y’all Means All 

  • First Methodist

  • It would be nice to sign another church

  • Someone needs to meet with the Pastor and get them signed up

• Safe Zone Training 

  • We need to sit down and pick dates and do a public safe zone

  • Then start reaching out to businesses and organization again

• AKY Discord Server

  • Test driving with the board now, will be available to all leadership soon

• Community Survey

  • Survey launch

  • Make digital copy to share

• Kentucky Black Pride Festival (September 13-15)

  • Heather and Kasheena will be tabling this event

  • What merch is available?

    • Fans, umbrellas, jewelry, 

    • Holly can meet someone at the storage unit next week

  • Print more zines

    • Holly will print more, ask Kasheena how many are left

    • Kasheena may need help assembling zines

• Pikeville Pride (October 12)

  • We need pictures of anything we want to hand out

  • Holly will work on this when she goes to the storage unit

  • Tents will have to have weights

  • Not selling anything to make it easier

  • It would be nice to have people volunteer with this event, aside from tabling

  • Who can volunteer and who can table?

• Huntington Pride (October 19)

  • Heather is still awaiting a response

  • Also something we should offer volunteer support for 

New Business:

• Youth Pride pool party (September 21, 2:30 - 4:30)

  • Need $50 from youth budget

• Repair Affair (Septermber 28)

  • Do we want to volunteer as an organization?

  • We could make pins to wear

  • We need to figure out who can go

  • Someone needs to register

  • Are there any other community events we would like to be involved with?

    • Could volunteer for latin night (friday, oct 4,6pm, part of first friday)

• Hope’s Place “Working with the LGBTQIA+ Community”

  • Do we want to contact the person running this class?

  • It could be an opportunity for networking, aiding another org, or Safe Zone Training

  • Sean and Bronte will head this

• Partnering with Girl Scouts

  • Pride was contacted by a girl scout representative

  • There is a badge they can earn for helping a lgbt community group

  • Holly will send the pdf in leadership group

  • They would like to do it during pride month

• Base Building

  • Re-branding Found Family

    • Heather and Jenee will plan one

    • Plan activities like paint and sip or craft night

    • You Pick flower farm, bring a picnic, photo shoots for donations, after 3pm

    • New name: Forging family, finding family, forging connections, forging community, inclusive name

  • What else can we do right now?

    • Reach out to EKY mutual fund

    • Elliot has a lead on a mutual aid effort through KPU

  • Last months ideas: Social media blasts, small events/mixers, Adult DnD, book clubs, minecraft servers, gay kickball league, gay field day, more mutual aid efforts for queer community, email/text chains

• Boyd Co Fairness ordinance

  • What can we be doing? 

  • Contact Human Rights initiative 

  • Letter to the Editor

  • Plan to write letters in Oct, during LGBTQ history month

• Coming out day event in Oct? In conjunction with found family? 

  • Art walk

  • Bronte wants to plan something 

  • Make an event pitch and post to leadership group

Next Steps:

• What do we want to accomplish this month?

  • Open board position, add to by laws and post position

  • Register to volunteer at the repair affair, prides, and latin night

  • Contact Hopes Place

  • Plan the found family event 

• What are everyone’s individual goals/tasks this month?

Holly made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Sean seconded. Motion passed.
